Ms Lucy Chesire

Awardee photoFor her achievements as a leading international advocate on behalf of people affected by TB and TB/HIV and her steadfast commitment to their cause.

Ms Lucy Chesire is a leading international patient activist who has achieved important TB advancements at both global and regional levels. Among a myriad of other activities, Ms Chesire serves as a TB Advocacy Advisor for the ACTION project-Kenya, hosted by Kenya AIDS NGO Consortium and was instrumental in launching the TB Advocacy project. As a survivor of HIV-TB co-infection, Ms Chesire has brought a passionate dedication to increasing awareness and advocacy efforts on behalf of the TB and TB/HIV communities. She is a member of many advisory groups on TB/HIV, and has been an international spokesperson for TB/HIV at many high profile events, including the Global Leaders Forum in June 2008 and the Pacific Health Summit in June 2009.

Ms Chesire received her B.Sc. in Nutrition from Egerton University, Kenya as well as a diploma in public health in 2007 in addition to much other coursework in support of her work as a nutrition specialist and TB/HIV advocate.

Professor Stewart Cole

Awardee photoFor his visionary leadership and groundbreaking accomplishments in genetic research on m. tuberculosis and the quest to develop effective new TB drugs.

Professor Stewart Cole, B.Sc. and PhD, is an international authority in bacterial molecular-genetics and genomics. He currently serves as Professor and Director at the Global Health Institute, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. His studies on multidrug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis have made him a recognized leader in TB research. His laboratory is currently leading an international project to discover new drugs to treat TB, the findings of which will have direct relevance on disease control in both developing and developed nations.

The author of over 250 scientific papers and review articles, Professor Cole has been the recipient of many awards and distinctions including Prix Jean-Pierre Lecocq, Academie des Sciences; Prix Thérèse Lebrasseur, Fondation de France; Marjory Stephenson Prize Lecture, Society for General Microbiology; Robert Koch Lecture, International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease; EMBO Member; ISI Highly Cited Researcher; Chevalier dans l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur; Snell Memorial Lecture, British Thoracic Society; Fellow of the Royal Society.
