Organization Description:

MUKIKUTE is a registered Tanzanian Local NGO composed of Former TB Patients. Since 2005 MUKIKUTE in Collaboration with the ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) The group when was formed aimed at increasing community participation in TB and TB/HIV control with the ultimate goal of reducing TB and TB/HIV burden in the community through:-Supervision of patients who swallow their TB medicines under home based directly observed treatment (DOT),Creation of community awareness around TB and TB/HIV control using sensitization meetings and theater groups and Supporting TB patients to adhere to treatment through home visits and health facility counseling sessions.
Activity undertaken to control TB
•To expand coverage of the TB/HIV educational program at District level in Tanzania
•To increase knowledge and awareness on TB and HIV among general
Population in Tanzania
•To prevent TB transmission at community and HF level in Tanzania
•To combat stigma among the general population for TB Patients and People living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania
•To empower community on TB/HIV control
•To establish and strengthen Former TB Patients approach in District with or without TB Clubs in Tanzania
PLANS FOR TB CONTROL
•To establish and train District TB Clubs in Tanzania
•Oversee all activities of former TB Patients through District TB Clubs.
•To evaluate and monitor progress of all District TB Clubs in Tanzania.
•To search for financial and material support from International and local donors for District TB Clubs
•To stand for TB and HIV Patients rights in Tanzania
•Compile and report quarterly and annual Technical and financial reports from all District TB Clubs in Tanzania
•To conduct Supportive supervision to District TB Clubs in Tanzania.
•To establish awareness within the community on the proper care of the people living with Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS.
•To support orphans, vulnerable children and others who need help.

Since its inception MKIKUTE has achieved the following Increased treatment success rate from 76 % in 2005 to 90% in 2010,Reduced default rate from 16% in 2005 t0 6%.in 2010 ,A total of 3886 patients (74 %) have been supervised by MUKIKUTE in Temeke Municipal, Has worked with the National TB/Leprosy Program to support formation of 19 former TB clubs across the country including 8 from Dar es Salaam region, Increased partnership with local and international organizations including PASADA from Tanzania, Norwegian Heart and Lung Patients Organization (LHL) from Norway and International Centre for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) and CDC from USA.

TB Care Delivery:
Pursue high –quality DOT expansion with Special emphasis on Pediatric TB and Active Case Finding: Potential activities:-A) Community DOT; MUKIKUTE in collaboration with Health Care workers under the supervision of NTLP will follow up TB patients and provide them with Anti TB drugs at home (Treatment Supporters) and emphasize treatment adherence. Coordinate with NTLP in the development of the Childhood TB guidelines by incorporating the Pediatric Community TB Care component and participate in rolling out and implementing the guidelines national wide

Drug-Resistant TB:
To provide psychosocial support to MDR Patients in Kibongoto Hospital
To emphasis treatment adherence among Most at rosk population who are on TB Treatment and other Patients through Health Education at Health Facility and community.
