Organization Description: |
For almost 25 years Mainline has worked with substance users in the Netherlands. Experience has taught us that a respectful, flexible, and pragmatic approach is the best way to address the (health) problems associated with drug use and addiction. Our approach has proven to be effective in the Netherlands and our understanding of drug use, addiction, and the societal problems caused by drug use, has been of great value in setting up policy. Mainline’s ultimate goal is to share our knowledge and expertise with local organisations worldwide and to reach as many drug users as possible with reliable information and quality care.
Our international health programmes for drug users focus on the prevention of infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, sti's and TB. Drug users are often marginalised in society and this, in combination to their drug use makes them one of the populations most at risk to contract infectious diseases. In all our programming we try to set up integrated services to reduce the harm caused by drug use. This includes prevention of TB, testing on TB and TB treatment (if accessible). |

Contribution |
Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below: |
TB-HIV: Mainline's international programmes focus on preventing the spread of hiv/aids and other infectious diseases among (injecting) drug users. Although the programmes put hiv/aids central, we are always aware of the risks of other infectious diseases. Hepatitis C and TB in particular are of major concern. All our programmes seek to increase access to integrated services and take co-infections into account. Adherence to treatment is a topic of concern among our target group, both for ARV's and for TB treatment. In the 5 countries we currently work we reach approximately 5000 injecting drug users with direct services. Depending on the country and the provisions this country offers in terms of TB treatment we try to connect to existing services, encourage testing and educate clients about symptoms of TB. We do not offer direct TB services ourselves or through our local partners, but refer for treatment. |
