Organization Description:
The institute for the Development of Educational and Ecological Alternatives (IDEAS) was organized and in the midst of the growing national calls for democratization in the Philippines. Registered in April 1985, IDEAS promote alternatives to the environmentally degrading policies, programs and projects of the government. It also sought to provide basic services to the marginalized sectors like indigenous peoples and poor farmers. Our interest in Tuberculosis stemmed from the increasing incidence of TB in our project communities especially among indigenous peoples. While we have been part of the anti TB campaign of the local government, we felt it imperative that communities must be empowered to be proactive in the promotion of anti TB initiatives. TB is also associated with HIV-AIDS being an opportunitistic infection that increases the vulnerability of HIV-AIDS positive. Indigenous peoples are no longer safe from possible HIV infection considering their increasing integration in the mainstream society especially in Palawan where there has been a recorded incidence of HIV which placed it in the HIV map in the country.
