1. WHO WE ARE

The Foundation for Professional Development (FPD), established in 1997 by the South African Medical Association, is registered with the Department of Education as a private institute for higher education. To date, FPD has trained over 130 000 students.

In keeping with the three scholarships of education, FPD maintains a strong focus towards capacity development and research. Currently, 180 000 patients are tested annually with over 108 000 patients active on ART. As part of the FPD activities the that’sit (Tuberculosis HIV/AIDS Treatment, Support and Integrated Therapy) programme has been established as a TB focus area for activities. This project is the first in the world to focus on integration and is in collaboration with the TB Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit of SA. Currently that’sit supports more than 150 clinics in rural sites in 5 provinces in SA. Its activities focus on the 3 I’s of WHO, namely; IPT, Increased case finding and Infection control. In addition, that’sit also ensures that TB patients know their status and HIV positive patients are screened for TB. that’sit emphasises systems support to ensure proper reconciliation and reporting is conducted and to ensure systems information management. that’sit aims to decrease stigma associated with both epidemics (TB and HIV). that’sit utilises FPD Training Programmes, ensuring that health care workers are trained in HIV and TB.

Overall, more than 75 000 patients have benefited from this programme since its inception in 2005.

2. OUR INTEREST IN TB

The FPD, together with the MRC, run HIV/TB integration services due to the fact that TB and HIV cannot be ignored. Firstly, TB is a national priority. Secondly, South Africa is one of High M/XDR-TB burden countries. Thirdly, there is a high co-infection rate (60-80%).

3. WHAT WE DO FOR TB CONTROL

• Counselling and Testing TB patients
• 6 monthly screening for HIV positive patients
• Introduction of IPT
• Early initiation of all TB patients on
