Organization Description:
Yayasan Harapan Permata Hati Kita or YAKITA for short is an addiction recovery and community center, based in Bogor, but with branches in

Banda Aceh, Lhokseumawe, Bogor, Central Java, East Java, Bali, NTT, and Jayapura.

YAKITA was the first to provide Indonesia with the first data of HIV and HCV among addicts in Indonesia, in October 1999, spurring the country to do more prevention and intervention. We were also the first drug recovery in the country that worked with HIV simultaneously.

Working with HIV, we have also been providing outreach work to high risk groups, harm reduction programs, VCT, CST and buddy programs. TB, naturally is part of the problem with many HIV positive IDUs having TB, and their families are also often infected with TB. We have coordinated several anti TB Days.

We have been speaking about TB since 2005, and would like to do more. In 2005 we began to take part in carrying out World TB Day and handed out TB flyers and stickers in the streets. In East Java, the NTP printed out the brochures we designed and also did the same with our branch in Surabaya.

We fully believe in early treatment and in identification of TB as early as possible, however believe that this can be done in collaboration with government services that already provides free TB treatment. The issue that we find is that many of the early symptoms are not caught in time and patients are not comfortable in going to clinics. We have also seen cases of TB with scrofuloderma, verrucosa cutis being ignored when taken to hospitals, and not suspected as TB and not given TB treatment.

As a community foundation, we worry that we would have to face MDR-TB in the future. Having XDR-TB and XXDR-TB would also be a scary prospect. HIV is already in the country, Hepatitis is endemic but also not understood, with TB to add to the complications. Indonesia still has a significant number of TB cases, whether we are on track or not.

Since we do outreach and awareness raising on substance abuse, HIV, Reproductive Health
