Organization Description: |
Islamic Center for Peace Democracy and Human Rights is a Ghanaian NGO dedicated to the promotion of democracy, religious tolerance and respect for human rights. The principal goal of ICPDHR is to promote religious tolerance, improved quality of life of people and peaceful co-existence among all religions.
A survey conducted by ICPDHR in the Muslim communities revealed that activities of some "Mallams" (Muslim religious teachers) are contributing negatively to efforts at stopping TB in Muslim communities. Instead of encouraging anyone who is coughing for weeks to report at the hospital, the Mallams have taken it upon themselves to treat TB patient at homes; saying it is a spiritual disease which requires spiritual treatment.
To address this problems ICPDHR is implementing a project which seeks to contribute effectively to stopping TB especially in the Muslim communities in the country starting from Kumasi. The project seeks to mobilize major mosques in Muslim communities and get Muslim religious leaders more involved in educating and encouraging TB patients in their communities and congregation to become active participants in their diagnosis and take all their anti TB drugs as directed.
The center is currently embarking on a programme aimed at persuading TB suspected patients within the various Muslim communities in Kumasi to report to any nearby health facility for sputum check. |
