One of our involvements in controlling tuberculosis (TB) is detecting Tuberculosis early and referring people with active disease. This we do by spreading correct and complete information about TB and distribution of IEC materials in vernacular in markets, motor parks, schools, community festivals and so on. Advocacy visits to community leaders to discuss with them what we thought was the way forward, and agreeing within the community to use members of the community as volunteers to spread accurate tuberculosis education messages. This was important because, once we educate community volunteers within the community it will be easy for us to eradicate certain problems regarding the spread of TB, and break some barriers and myths that surround Tuberculosis transmissions.
With the mapping exercise, community volunteers were selected. These community volunteers were later trained on identification of TB suspects, counseling, referring them to health centers and monitoring DOTS for those diagnosed with tuberculosis who cannot afford attending daily clinics for their TB drugs either due to poor health, transportation or long distance trekking to health centers, including those who do not want to be seen collecting TB drugs. Nutrition outreaches for those vulnerable children on ART or TB drugs.
Using community volunteers to carry out advocacy actions, address verification and defaulters tracing, pursuing individual case, transmitting information to all at risk population including data collection. Using community leaders because they are veritable means for information transmission, because, community leaders wield good influence on the belief of the people, leading to discontinuation of the myths and misconception that surrounds the spread of TB. The community has come to appreciate and understand the significance of TB prevention, care and support especially the use of community volunteers who come from same communities like TB patients and who are also TB survivors. This has galvanized interest from the community as demonstrated by their active participation. in the TB prevention affairs. TB prevention education has really motivated the community members and it has changed the way they think about and understand issues concerning Tuberculosis.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB Care Delivery:
We mobilize rural communities and create more awareness about Tuberculosis control and train community volunteers who assist in identification of suspects, refer them for diagnosis and treatment and provide DOT services in rural hard to reach areas. This led to community ownership of TB programs.

TB-HIV:
Our interests center on grassroot mobilizations and campaigns for the betterment of our communities and establishing better outreach to populations at risks for acquiring HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis through referral links between clinics providing TB and HIV/AIDS services.
