Organization Description: |
The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) Canada is recognized today as Africa's premier health development organization. Headquartered in Africa with the majority of its staff being African, AMREF is the only international African NGO of its kind.
AMREF's mission is to ensure access to good health for the most vulnerable and marginalized people in Africa. With their active involvement, we develop and implement innovative and sustainable solutions to critical health challenges facing the continent.
Our mission in Canada is to support AMREF in Africa to address critical health challenges by raising funds, providing project support, building capacity, raising awareness and engaging the Canadian public in African health development.
Since 1957, AMREF has been working closely with rural and urban communities to empower people, and its work with African governments is improving health systems.

Please tell us how your organization is contributing to your country's national TB control plan: |
AMREF's focus is on international programs and not local initiatives in Canada. In Uganda, where our current TB program is being implemented we are part of the National TB program and are in constant contact with the national NTLP. As a result of the weak health system, we train, incollaboration with NTLP staff, all levels of health workers on identifying and testing for TB cases. We also document our efforts in order to provide lessons learnt to the NTLP and Ministry of Health. |
