Organization Description: |
UNITAID was established to support existing efforts by providing additional funding for the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. The additional funding comes primarily from a solidarity contribution on airline tickets. Through implementing partners, UNITAID channels its funds to the purchasing of tests and medicines of assured quality and ensuring fast delivery to the patients who most need them - those in low- and middle-income countries. UNITAID's action adds value to global efforts by targeting specific niche areas to fill gaps in access and the provision of health commodities. Thanks to a flexible financing model, UNITAID is able to: - commit funds over the long term for sustainable action - impact on the health commodities market by reducing prices and pushing up volume of production - drive the development of new and necessary medicine formulations by creating a predictable market for them - promote quality in medicines and diagnostics by investing in long-term technical assistance through the World Health Organization's (WHO's) prequalification programme.
UNITAID was launched in September 2006 by the Governments of Brazil, Chile, France, Norway and the United Kingdom. Today it is supported by 28 countries in total and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is hosted by the World Health Organization and works with international partners active in the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
