Created in August 2003, the State Forum of NGO’s in the Fight Against Tuberculosis in the State of Rio de Janeiro is a civil movement composed of community leaders organized in the fight against tuberculosis.
Made up of governmental and non-governmental participants, it acts to control both the spread and the effects of the disease through out the state. Their top priority being those groups which find themselves most vulnerable to infection, such as: street population, prisoners, people who are infected with HIV, drug addicts and the inhabitants of poor and isolated communities who because of lack of information and the difficulty of access don’t look for health services or abandon treatment.
It’s old but it’s not the past
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the oldest diseases in the world, but is not a disease of the past like so many people imagine. Since 1993 the World Health Organization has considered the disease to be in a state of emergency, due to its chronic resurgence around the globe. According to estimations by the W.H.O., two billion people, or one-third of the world’s population, are infected by the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Of these, eight million people develop the disease and two million people die each year.
Brazil is in 16th place between the 22 countries that are responsible for 80% of the total Tuberculosis cases in the world. It is estimated that there are more than 50 million infected people around the country. Each year there around 85.000 new cases reported, and about 5.000 deaths attributed to the disease.
Historically, Rio de Janeiro has led the nation by consistently presenting the highest rates of incidence in the entire country (90/100.000 inhabitants), with each year 17.000 new cases being registered around the state.
