Organization Description:
Integrated Development in Focus (DIF) was formed and inaugurated as a capacity building social development agency involved primarily in poverty reduction, preventive health education, health promotion, reproductive health, rural/urban development, capacity building and the development of networks. It is registered with the Registrar General’s Department (N. G. 15,553) and recognized by the Department of Social Welfare No.D.S.W.2701.

Its mission is to mobilize resources and stakeholders to empower poor vulnerable women, youth and children to realize their own development, know about themselves and be responsible adults. The organization is interested in the health, socio-economic needs and ensuring the future of children, youth and poor women in deprived, underserved and hard to reach areas, locally and internationally.

It promotes models of participatory, sustainable and self-reliant development through action-research. This is mostly achieved through community education, behavioural change communication (BCC), training, outreach activities, skills development and peer education, using drumming, dancing and interactive drama/theatre as a means of communication to transfer information on women, children and youth issues as well as sensitize stakeholders on factual reproductive health issues and preventive heath.

Realizing the essence of good health as well as sound environment, DIF have outlined programmes and policies that would promote the welfare of poor vulnerable women, children and youth. The health and socio-economic welfare of women, children and youth is fundamental to their development and are vital for survival.
It is for these reasons that DIF continues to work in the area of TB. DIF won the TB Survival Project which is an International award in December, 2009 and the STBP has supported the organization's TB activities from 2009.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB Care Delivery:
DIF believes in the Partnership’s vision, mission and targets as well as the partnership’s strategic directions and objectives. DIF started working in the area of Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization activities for TB in 2005 and has made an impact in Ghana on the global burden. It is for this reason that the NTP supported DIF’s TB activities for the first time in 2007 and has continued with the support. DIF won the TB Survival Project which is an international award in December, 2009 and the STBP challenge facility for CSOs in 2009 and 2010. DIF therefore continues to work tirelessly towards contributing to halve the global target set on TB prevalence and deaths by 2015.
DIF continues to work directly with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the District Health Management Teams (DHMT). Work plans are drawn in accordance with the national TB plan and are approved by the NTP. DIF has been supported by the GHS to train over 200 Treatment Supporters including Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Community Champions and community members to support treatment at the community level and undertake community-based ACSM activities.
DIF provides TB education and DOTS services in 61 deprived, remote, underserved and hard to reach communities in two districts of the Greater Accra Region. Apart from that, 30 cured clients have been trained as advocates for TB and to be the voice for positive clients and their caretakers.
DIF creates platforms for chiefs to destigmatize the disease and to effect policies at the local level and to create the conducive environment for TB clients. DIF is working with the media to promote TB activities as well as other relevant stakeholders. DIF shares its report with all stakeholders including STBP, Ghana.
DIF celebrates the World TB Day every year since 2007 and also organizes a district or municipal rally thus bringing key stakeholders, the Assembly and community members together to talk about TB, plan and to make commitments for TB activities. It is in DIF’s interest to see TB incidence, prevalence and death rate trends go down rapidly over the next years as a result of the various planned TB control activities.

TB-HIV:
DIF provides colaborative TB/HIV education and training to its volunteers and screens people living with HIV for TB and refers them to the appropriate health facilities for prompt treatment.
