Organization Description: |
Pastoralist Initiative Development Aid (PIDA) aims to improve the health and well-being of pastoralist communities by enhancing access to healthcare services and raising awareness about preventable diseases. Our mission is to address the unique health challenges faced by these communities, including limited healthcare access and mobility-related barriers.
In relation to tuberculosis (TB) control, PIDA is focused on raising awareness, promoting prevention, and improving early detection and treatment. Through community-based initiatives and partnerships with local healthcare providers, we aim to ensure timely TB care and reduce stigma, particularly in remote pastoralist areas. We are interested in tuberculosis (TB) because it remains a significant health threat to pastoralist communities, who often face limited access to healthcare and are at higher risk due to factors such as mobility, overcrowding, and inadequate health infrastructure. TB can spread undiagnosed and untreated in these communities, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Addressing TB is essential for improving the overall health of these vulnerable populations, reducing stigma, and ensuring that individuals receive the care they need for better health outcomes. PIDA plans to integrate tuberculosis (TB) control into our existing healthcare and community programs. We aim to raise awareness about TB symptoms, prevention, and treatment through community outreach and education. We will collaborate with local health authorities to improve early detection and facilitate access to TB diagnosis and treatment, especially in remote pastoralist areas. Additionally, PIDA will work to reduce TB stigma by promoting open discussions and supporting individuals affected by the disease, ensuring they receive timely and effective care. |

Contribution |
Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below: |
TB Care Delivery: PIDA will contribute to TB Care Delivery through advocacy, communications, and social mobilization. We will advocate for increased resources and support for TB prevention and treatment in pastoralist regions, engaging local governments and health authorities. Our communication campaigns, starting in March 2025, will use radio, community meetings, and local influencers to raise awareness about TB symptoms and prevention. Additionally, we will mobilize community leaders and health workers to organize TB awareness activities, such as health fairs and screenings, to reduce stigma and promote early detection in the Somali Region of Ethiopia and northern Kenya.
Drug-Resistant TB: PIDA will address Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB) by focusing on early detection, treatment adherence, and community support. We will raise awareness about DR-TB through local campaigns, starting in 2025 in the Somali Region of Ethiopia and northern Kenya. PIDA will enhance diagnostics by promoting mobile screening and lab support, ensuring accurate detection. We will collaborate with health authorities to provide appropriate treatment and support adherence through community-based initiatives. Additionally, PIDA will reduce stigma and encourage treatment completion through social mobilization and support groups.
Laboratory Strengthening: PIDA will strengthen laboratory capacity by supporting local health facilities with equipment and training to improve TB and DR-TB diagnostics, starting in 2025. We will introduce mobile labs to reach remote areas and ensure timely diagnosis. Additionally, PIDA will train health workers to enhance diagnostic skills and improve laboratory management, strengthening overall health services in pastoralist communities.
