Organization Description Mission and Main Focus of Work: Our organization’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of communities in KwaZulu-Natal by providing comprehensive support to individuals affected by tuberculosis (TB). We aim to empower local caregivers, raise awareness, and ensure timely access to TB diagnosis and treatment. Our main focus is on improving TB prevention, increasing treatment adherence, and reducing the stigma associated with TB in underserved communities. Why We Are Interested in Tuberculosis: We are deeply committed to addressing tuberculosis because it remains one of the leading public health challenges in South Africa, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, which has a high TB burden. Tuberculosis not only affects individuals physically but also has profound social and economic consequences. We believe that by targeting TB at the community level through education, care, and advocacy, we can contribute to the national and global efforts to eradicate the disease and save lives. What We Are Doing or Planning to Do for TB Control: As a newly established organization, we have embarked on several key initiatives to support TB control: Community Awareness and Education: We conduct regular information sessions to educate the community about TB symptoms, prevention, and treatment options. Our goal is to empower individuals to recognize TB early and seek appropriate medical care. Caregiver Training and Support: We provide training and mentorship to caregivers, enabling them to support TB patients in following through with treatment and managing their health effectively. Collaboration with Health Authorities: We work closely with local health departments and clinics to ensure seamless referrals, access to TB services, and comprehensive care for patients. Please tell us how your organization is contributing to your country's national TB control plan: |
Our organization plays a critical role in supporting and advancing the objectives of South Africa’s national TB control plan. Although we are a newly established organization, our commitment is to make a significant impact in the fight against TB in KwaZulu-Natal by focusing on the following areas: Community Engagement and Awareness: We focus on raising awareness about TB prevention, symptoms, and treatment. By educating local communities, we aim to reduce stigma and encourage people to seek testing and treatment early, which aligns with the national plan’s objectives to improve TB diagnosis and reduce transmission. Supporting Caregivers and Community Health Workers: As a starting point, our organization trains and supports a dedicated group of caregivers who directly assist individuals with TB. These caregivers provide essential care and follow-up, ensuring that patients adhere to treatment regimens, thus contributing to reducing TB cases and improving treatment outcomes, in line with the national strategy. Strengthening TB Diagnosis and Treatment Access: We help ensure that communities have access to TB testing and treatment services. By working closely with local health authorities, we aim to bridge gaps in health infrastructure, offering patients easier access to medical support and helping to ensure consistent and timely treatment, contributing directly to the national efforts to increase treatment adherence and cure rates. Advocacy and Policy Support: We are committed to advocating for TB patients and their families, working to amplify their voices in the health system and support the implementation of national TB control policies. This advocacy can help highlight local challenges and needs that require more targeted interventions, ensuring that national policies are appropriately adapted to address the context of our community. Monitoring and Evaluation: As part of the national strategy, we collect data on TB prevalence, treatment outcomes, and community needs. Our work in data collection and reporting helps to inform national TB control efforts and provides insights into the effectiveness of current strategies at the local level.

TB-HIV: Our organization is dedicated to contributing to the Global Plan to Stop TB through various initiatives aimed at controlling the spread of tuberculosis and improving the outcomes for affected individuals in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Though we are still a relatively new organization, we are already aligning our activities with key priorities in the Global Plan, and we have specific goals for the future. 1. Ensuring Access to Quality TB Care Our organization plays a role in increasing access to quality TB diagnosis, treatment, and care by collaborating with local health systems. We work with community health workers, caregivers, and clinics to ensure that individuals in our community receive timely treatment. Plans for 2025: We aim to expand our collaboration with local health centers to provide free TB screening and diagnostic services in underserved areas. Country: South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal Province) 2. Strengthening TB Prevention and Treatment Adherence Our focus on ensuring that individuals adhere to their treatment regimens helps to reduce the transmission of TB. We provide direct support to TB patients by offering counseling, follow-up services, and adherence monitoring, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach communities. Ongoing Work: We are actively training a growing number of caregivers to provide home-based support for patients on treatment. By doing so, we aim to minimize treatment interruptions and prevent the spread of drug-resistant TB. Plans for 2025: Expanding our caregiver network to reach more patients in remote areas and ensuring that every patient receives adequate support during their treatment journey. Country: South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal Province) 3. Promoting TB Awareness and Reducing Stigma A core aspect of our mission is to reduce the stigma surrounding TB through awareness campaigns. We educate communities about TB prevention, symptoms, and the importance of seeking care early. We hold regular community health days and information sessions to empower individuals with the knowledge to take action. Plans for 2024 and beyond: Launching a large-scale TB awareness campaign through schools, churches, and local organizations to reach a broader audience and challenge the stigma associated with TB. Country: South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal Province) 4. Supporting TB Research and Data Collection Our organization is committed to supporting evidence-based approaches for TB control. We collect local TB data, including case studies and treatment outcomes, and share our findings with the local health department to inform better intervention strategies. Ongoing Work: We have started collaborating with local health authorities to track and report TB cases, treatment adherence, and outcomes. This data contributes to a clearer understanding of the local TB epidemic and the challenges the community faces. Plans for 2025: Implementing a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system that tracks the effectiveness of our TB interventions and allows for data-driven decision-making. Country: South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal Province) 5. Supporting TB-affected Communities and Advocacy We advocate for stronger policies and investments in TB care, supporting national TB strategies by raising the voices of the most affected populations. Our community-based approach includes actively participating in regional and national forums on TB and healthcare policies. Plans for 2025: We aim to become more involved in advocacy at the national level to ensure that local challenges related to TB, especially in rural and economically disadvantaged areas, are addressed in the national TB strategy. Country: South Africa 6. Expanding Care for Drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) With the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant TB, we recognize the urgent need to enhance care for individuals diagnosed with DR-TB. Our organization plans to develop specialized support for DR-TB patients, offering both medical and psychosocial assistance to improve adherence and outcomes. Plans for 2025: We are committed to expanding our services to specifically support patients with DR-TB, providing them with comprehensive care plans that include both medical treatment and community support. Country: South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal Province)
