Please tell us how your organization is contributing to your country's national TB control plan:
Sustainable Health and Environment (SHE) contributes to Ghana’s national TB control plan by implementing community-focused initiatives that address barriers to TB care and empower vulnerable populations. Although newly established, SHE draws upon the extensive expertise of its team members, who have been instrumental in various TB-specific projects, including the Challenge Facility for Civil Society (CFCS) initiative led by SCORE-TB.

Our work aligns with national priorities by enhancing community engagement, addressing stigma, and advocating for legal and policy reforms to ensure equitable access to TB care. SHE utilizes tools like the Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) system, including the One Impact tool, to gather data, track patient experiences, and identify gaps in service delivery.

Through partnerships with organizations such as Afro Global Alliance, NAP+ Ghana, and the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) Ghana, SHE also contributes to mapping key and vulnerable populations (KVPs), as demonstrated in the “Leave No One Behind” initiative. This work helps ensure that services reach marginalized groups, including people living with HIV.

Additionally, SHE focuses on addressing systemic barriers by supporting the initiation of a TB legal framework in collaboration with Lawyers Alert Nigeria. These efforts strengthen accountability mechanisms and promote human rights, further advancing the objectives of the national TB control plan.

SHE is committed to complementing Ghana’s TB control efforts to achieve impactful and sustainable outcomes by mobilizing communities, leveraging partnerships, and advocating for inclusive policies.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB Care Delivery:
SHE actively engages in advocacy, communication, and social mobilization to enhance TB care delivery in Ghana. Through community-led monitoring initiatives, such as the use of the "One Impact Tool," SHE ensures the voices of TB-affected individuals are amplified. We have implemented grassroots advocacy campaigns, including participation in the “Leave No One Behind” initiative (2023-2024), which mapped key and vulnerable populations to identify barriers to TB care and foster inclusive service delivery. SHE will emphasize advocacy, communications, and social mobilization to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB) and its intersection with community health. Using SMART tools and technologies, SHE will educate communities on TB prevention, promote early diagnosis, and ensure access to care, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, youth, and women. The organization aims to initiate youth-targeted campaigns, fostering leadership among young advocates in Ghana to address TB challenges.

Advocacy and Policy Influence:
SHE has been instrumental in initiating discussions on TB-related legal frameworks. Notably, in partnership with Lawyers Alert Nigeria (2024), Board member at SHE contributed to the groundwork for a TB legal landscape in Ghana, targeted at addressing human rights and accountability issues.

TB-HIV:
SHE integrates TB-HIV collaborative activities into its projects. In collaboration with Afro Global Alliance and NAP+ Ghana, SHE advocates for improved health services for people co-infected with TB and HIV. These efforts include community sensitization and education campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and ensuring equitable access to care. Recognizing the link between TB and HIV, SHE will collaborate with key stakeholders to improve dual screening and treatment adherence. It will engage community rights and gender (CRG) initiatives to empower affected populations while addressing stigma and discrimination. SHE plans to integrate TB-HIV education into its health outreach programs, focusing on vulnerable groups, including youth and those in rural areas.

Laboratory Strengthening:
SHE aims to contribute to laboratory strengthening by advocating for improved diagnostic infrastructure. Through collaboration with governmental bodies and NGOs, SHE will support capacity-building workshops for laboratory personnel, ensuring timely and accurate TB detection.

Fundamental Research:
Future Contributions
Youth Engagement: SHE will develop targeted interventions to involve young people in TB awareness and prevention activities. This includes training youth leaders and utilizing digital platforms for advocacy.
Climate Change and Health: SHE will address environmental factors that exacerbate TB, such as poor air quality and urban overcrowding, aligning its TB interventions with broader environmental sustainability goals.
Community-Led Monitoring (CLM): SHE will adopt tools like the One Impact app to empower communities in tracking service delivery and reporting barriers to TB care.

Research:
SHE leverages data-driven approaches to inform policy and interventions. By conducting community-based research, such as tracking the barriers faced by TB-affected individuals in marginalized communities, SHE contributes actionable insights to improve TB care delivery systems.

SHE is committed to exploring the social determinants of TB through innovative research projects. By utilizing data analytics and geospatial tools, SHE will identify TB hotspots and evaluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies. This research will inform policy recommendations and guide future programming.
Through these targeted efforts, SHE is dedicated to advancing the objectives of the Global Plan to Stop TB, ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against TB.
