Contribution |
Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below: |
TB Care Delivery: Rural Focus Zambia (RUFOZ) is actively engaged in advocacy, communication, and social mobilization to improve TB care delivery in Zambia. The organization conducts:
1. Community Sensitization Campaigns: Raising awareness about TB symptoms, prevention, and treatment in rural areas of Zambia (2019–present). 2. Advocacy Efforts: Engaging policymakers to prioritize TB control in the national health agenda, including funding for TB services and integration with HIV programs. 3. Social Mobilization Initiatives: Training community health volunteers to educate their peers about TB and refer suspected cases to local health facilities.
Drug-Resistant TB: RUFOZ is beginning to engage in initiatives targeting multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB):
Plans: 1. Advocate for equitable access to MDR-TB diagnostics and treatment in hard-to-reach communities starting in 2025. 2. Capacity Building: Collaborating with health facilities to train healthcare workers on MDR-TB identification and management.
TB-HIV: Given Zambia’s high TB-HIV co-infection rates, RUFOZ focuses on:
1. integrated Campaigns: Joint TB and HIV screening in rural areas, such as Kasama District, to improve early detection and link patients to care. 2. Support for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW): Conducting education programs that highlight the importance of TB and HIV testing. 3. Ongoing Efforts: Strengthening referral mechanisms for TB-HIV co-management in collaboration with local clinics (2024–2026).
Laboratory Strengthening: RUFOZ supports laboratory strengthening by:
1. Collaborating with health facilities to improve diagnostic capacities in rural Zambia. 2. Advocating for better access to GeneXpert machines and other diagnostic tools in underserved regions.
New Diagnostics: While RUFOZ is not directly involved in developing new diagnostics, the organization supports the adoption and scale-up of innovative TB detection technologies within Zambia.
New TB Drugs: RUFOZ contributes by advocating for affordable and accessible TB medications in Zambia. The organization partners with health service providers to ensure rural populations have access to life-saving drugs.
New TB Vaccines: RUFOZ seeks to promote public awareness of TB vaccination campaigns and advocate for the introduction of innovative vaccines when available. |
