How Women Concern (WOCO) Contributes to the National TB Control Plan:

Women Concern (WOCO) aligns its initiatives with the national TB control plan by focusing on community-centered approaches that enhance awareness, prevention, and treatment access, particularly for vulnerable populations like rural women and girls. WOCO’s contributions include:

Community Awareness and Education:
WOCO conducts community sensitization campaigns to improve knowledge about TB symptoms, prevention, and treatment options, helping to reduce stigma and encourage early detection.

Capacity Building:
WOCO trains community health workers, empowering them to identify and refer suspected TB cases, provide treatment adherence support, and deliver TB education in rural and underserved areas.

Improving Access to TB Services:
By collaborating with local health authorities and clinics, WOCO facilitates mobile testing initiatives, ensuring rural communities have access to TB diagnosis and treatment.

Addressing Gender Inequities in TB Control:
WOCO integrates a gender-responsive approach by addressing unique barriers women face, such as lack of decision-making power, financial constraints, and stigma, ensuring equitable access to TB services.

Advocacy and Partnerships:
WOCO engages with policymakers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to advocate for increased resources and tailored TB control interventions that prioritize rural and marginalized communities.

Through these efforts, WOCO supports the national TB control plan's goals to reduce TB incidence and mortality while fostering a healthier, more inclusive society.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB-HIV:
Women Concern (WOCO) contributes to the Global Plan to Stop TB by integrating TB and HIV interventions in rural communities in Rwanda. Since 2020, WOCO has focused on:

TB-HIV Awareness: Conducting joint awareness campaigns on TB and HIV co-infection, targeting women and girls in underserved areas.
Capacity Building: Training community health workers to manage TB-HIV cases effectively.
Future plans (2024–2025) include scaling these efforts and collaborating regionally to address TB-HIV among women and girls in East Africa.

New Diagnostics:
Women Concern (WOCO) contributes to the Global Plan to Stop TB by promoting access to and utilization of new diagnostic tools in rural areas of Rwanda. Since 2023, WOCO has partnered with local health authorities to facilitate the implementation of molecular diagnostic technologies like GeneXpert in underserved communities.

WOCO raises awareness about the importance of early and accurate TB diagnosis through community campaigns and supports mobile clinics to bring new diagnostic solutions closer to vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls. These efforts help bridge diagnostic gaps, align with global targets, and contribute to reducing TB prevalence in Rwanda.
