| We collaborate with the TB infrastructure within Eswatini through the StopTB Partnership Mr. Vama Jele. The principal for the consultancy is an expert in occupational lung diseases and is involved in the area of work-acquired TB, namely from exposure within the mining sector who are known to have a higher prevalence of tuberculosis, silicosis and silicotuberculosis. | |

Fundamental Research: We recently assisted Eswatini to conduct the first study to determine the prevalence of silica-dust-induced diseases, including tb and silicotuberculosis. Through this research we have an action plan to continue to support the vital work of the ex-miners associations in both Eswatini and the wider-Southern sub-Saharan Africa region where we are also in a support capacity. We also supported the University of British Columbia and the Universities of Wits and Cape Town in South Africa in securing grant funding for vital research in using noval methods of using AI in the early detection of TB and silicosis using the CAD4TB and CAD4Silicosis software from Delft Imaging. We are actively involved in the local research and this extends beyond us providing just some resources but also technical expertise which we give as part of our corporate and social responsibility function. We are currently supporting the Southern Africa Miners Association in pilot projects in both Eswatini and Malawi as the two principal pilot sites before we look at rolling this out across another eight countries through their national ex-miners associations. | Declaration of interests: We do not have any conflict of interest as the existing partnerships were developed before the company was registered. We conduct our support in a pro-bono capacity and in full view of the executive committee who are aware of the arrangement to support some efforts financially such as donating materials, books, IT equipment and recently the URL addresses and some webspace until funding can be secured from more sustainable sources. | |
