1. Mission and Main Focus of work of SAF-TESO. Our mission is to empower local people in less privileged communities in the Teso sub region and Karamoja in eastern Uganda, through rights based interventions that increase to access to education, health care and sustainable living through income generating projects regardless of any affiliation.
Our Health Sector mission is to forge an efficient, effective and sustainable response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, TB and Malaria in Teso and Karamoja sub regions by building strategic partnerships. SAF-TESO TB /HIV and Malaria Prevention Projects, aspires to contribute to the Government of Uganda’s strategic plan “To achieve universal access targets for HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment, social support and protection by 2015/2020 in the first segment, second segment 2021-2025 and by third segment 2026-2030, join global forces in the commitment to support Government and Development Partners for ending TB as a public health challenge in the communities and cut to TB deaths by 90% and cases by 80% and by 2035 attain a vision of a world free of TB.
Main Focus of our work:
In 2012, SAF-TESO became an umbrella organization strengthening and collaborating with various development actors, CBOs, including NGOs and government line departments of the Teso and Karamoja Sub-Regions. Since then, SAF-TESO has strived to build collective efforts through its member organizations to combat the TB pandemic in the Teso and Karamoja sub-regions and it has expanded its mission to include malaria, HIV, drug abuse/misuse prevention ,Human Rights and Social Justice ,Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihoods , Education and environmental conservation. SAF-TESO has built and strengthened the capacities of Health and Human Rights CBOs, NGOs and key stakeholders like Local Governments with the aim of making structural changes and influencing policies surrounding public services (education and health care service provisions) in Uganda.

Currently SAF-TESO through Funding from AHF fund,CDFU and TASO is contributing to TB prevention through TB prevention by promotion of Communication, Dissemination,Public Awareness raising and Advocacy,we help to share information with the Public and Partners. Secondly SAF-TESO is conducting Advocacy, contact tracing of missed appointments, delivery of TB drugs for persons with stigma,also training community extension health workers and we hold community meetings and share information about TB prevention. SAF-TESO is actively involved in Advocacy and resource mobilisation and awareness raising, distribution of TB DOTS and Drug refills for IPT and refills for missed appointments.We do community TB and HIV testing and screening Services,STIs testing and we are coordinating over 30 CBOs and 15 NGOs and CSOs implementing TB and HIV and malaria prevention activities in the Teso and Karamoja sub regions Eastern Uganda. |

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below: |
TB Care Delivery: SAF-TESO being a human rights Advocacy organization for over 12 years is involved in the DOTS expansion Initiatives to ensure that it reaches to the hard to reach areas ,we actively participate in drug refills for IPT and refills for missed appointments and also SAF-TESO prints IEC materials with information on TB prevention which had significantly helped to contribute reduction in the spread of TB in rural communities.We do TB and HIV testing and screening community outreaches.For the improvement of DOTS in community through advocacy, communication, social mobilization,TB Healthcare Services & Technical Assistance.
Drug-Resistant TB: Drug misuse and abuse prevention campaigns in rural areas and both schools and Churches SAF-TESO has supported in the MDR cases through advocating for drug misuse and abuse prevention among teenage Children and adolescent youth.Also we do Advocacy for resources mobilisation, counseling and education awareness raising and providing information for tracking MDR TB cases in the Rural areas.
TB-HIV: Since 2018 todate SAF-TESO is funded by TASO and AHF Fund which have helped in the HIV and TB prevention . SAF-Teso has integrated HIV, TB and malaria prevention activities with livelihoods empowerment initiatives to mitigate drivers of TB and HIV.
Laboratory Strengthening: SAF-TESO collaborates with Laboratory technicians to take TB, malaria and HIV testing services and testing for STIs in the rural areas through mobile camps or testing clinics which has helped in strengthening community systems like CCLAD and HIV and TB testing is done at grassroot communities including screening.We offer technical assistance to the laboratory technicians.
New Diagnostics: We participate in Advocacy and resource mobilisation and awareness raising campaigns
New TB Drugs: SAF-TESO is operating deeply in the hard to reach areas ,there are persons who face extreme stigma and violence like Key populations like sex workers,fisher folks and LGBTQ persons who are always facing extreme stigma and violence and can't afford to get TB drugs so we are required to take TB drugs to such groups in their house holds or families.
New TB Vaccines: SAF-TESO is actively involved in Advocacy for resources mobilisation and awareness raising campaigns
Fundamental Research: SAF-TESO always participatex in grants writing, TB, HIV and malaria prevention requires data which we collect monthly and report quarterly to our donors like TASO and AHF fund.
Research: SAF-TESO publishes TB, malaria and HIV data and reports to all social platforms so that people can easily access this information. |
