Organization Description:
Nari Maitree (NM) means Women’s Solidarity, it is a non-governmental and non-profitable national level voluntary organization founded in 1983 with an aim to provide need-based services to the disadvantaged and vulnerable women, adolescent and children and to empower them to establish their basic rights for both rural and urban poor. Under the leadership of the Executive Director, a total of 640 (Female 450 and Male 190) skilled and efficient paid staff members have been working with NM. Over the years, Nari Maitree has emerged as one of the leading national NGOs dealing with urban problems, especially in the capital city of Dhaka. However, it has also been designing and implementing project/programs for the rural people across the country. In 2021-2022, Nari Maitree (NM) activities covered more than 426,146 women, children and youths of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Faridpur,Tongi, Rajshahi, Kishoreganj and Cox’s Bazar with financial and technical assistance from different bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors.

Nari Maitree collaborates with the community, government, and private stakeholders to complement efforts to strengthen the overall health system. Improving access, lifestyle, and health-seeking behaviour is the core of NM work. Nari Maitri has developed a unique holistic development system, which includes health care, poverty alleviation, microcredit, relief and rehabilitation, skill development training, gender equality, education expansion, women and child welfare and legal aid.

Nari Maitree’s values of dignity, compassion, inclusion, quality, innovation and transparency are held as the organization’s greatest strengths and integrated in all of Nari Maitree’s work. With over three decades of experience in poverty alleviation and social development, Nari Maitree’s has emerged as a successful and innovative model for sustainable change, currently reaching three million patrons and working in across 10 districts of Bangladesh.

The National TB Control Programme under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh are implementing TB control Programme in collaboration with different NGOs. Nari Maitree started its TB Control Programme in 2004 in Dhaka City Corporation under Urban Primary Health Care Project. In collaboration with National TB Control Programme (NTP), Nari Maitree covers about 1 million people by TB control Programme in two city corporation Dhaka city of Bangladesh through BRAC supported 7 seven diagnostic center and mobile van including 4 TB DOTS center and microscopy centers. In 2021 Nari Maitree receive funding under Round 10 of the Challenge Facility for Civil Society (CFCS) to engage in community-driven and high-level advocacy, overcome the barriers to accessing services, and monitor the TB response. The “Services for the Stop TB Partnership Challenge Facility for Civil Society responding to the devastating impact of COVID-19” project is implementing by Nari Maitree with the partnership of ARK Foundation. ARK foundation is responsible to implement the activities of objective 4.

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB Care Delivery:
Nari Maitree is playing an important role for creating platform for the people so that they can realize their own potential. With the support of Bangladesh government Nari Maitree established urban primary healthcare delivery model Centred on its female frontline community health workers . The volunteer s mobilize marginalized communities and linked the individuals to ensure reproductive, maternal and child wellbeing, primary healthcare, disability care and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases by providing health education, targeted health services, essential health commodities. Increasingly, their activities are complementing and linking to the public health system and community initiatives such as the expanded package of immunization campaigns.

Drug-Resistant TB:
NTP, under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), implements TB control strategies in partnership with the NGOs and oversees Programme management and implementation, development of national guidelines, strategies for advocacy, communication and social mobilization, capacity building, supply chain management, monitoring and evaluation. Nari Maitree ensure that the quality of the service delivered is uncompromised. Nari Maitree also stretched their support to strengthen the Government health system through the expansion of community-based TB services for both drug susceptible (DS) and drug resistant (DR) TB.

TB-HIV:
TB and HIV co-infection is treated by providing laboratory services, DOTS, activities including nutritional and investigation support (X-ray, biopsy, etc). Nari Maitree, Ashar Alo Society, and BRAC are implementing the collaborating activities under National TB Control Programme in their respective working areas. Various ACSM activities such as orientation of NGO field level staff on TB/HIV, networking meetings with NGO managerial staff, and orientation meetings with private clinics and hospitals are carried out under the Programme. Nari Maitree works for facilitating utilization and acceptance of HIV Testing and Counselling (HTC) services for TB patients.
