Organization Description: |
Disaster and Environmental Management Trust (DEMT) coordinates civil society responses to epidemics and climate change at subnational level in Mashonaland East Province of Zimbabwe which is chronically exposed to droughts, Malaria, Malnutrition, TB and HIV. The organisation's TB interventions are predominantly focused on TB affected communities promoting preventive measures, early identification of TB cases and facilitating early access to treatment. Our mission is to contribute towards identifying the estimated 28% missing people with TB in Zimbabwe and we are doing this by collaborating with community cadres, TB champions, District Hospitals, Community Health Facilities. Our flagship are the Community-Disease-Committees (CDCs) that we have established with support from the Stop TB Partnership in 10 high volume catchment areas in Mudzi and Mutoko rural districts of Zimbabwe to do targeted screening of TB and make early referrals of presumptive TB cases. |

Please tell us how your organization is contributing to your country's national TB control plan: |
With support from the Stop TB Partnership CFCS Round 10 DEMT is addressing under reporting of TB cases in the economically-disadvantaged rural Zimbabwe caused by delays in health care seeking, inadequate knowledge regarding TB cause and transmission, and inadequate contact investigation. To date, twenty Community-Disease-Committees (CDCs) in 20 high volume catchment areas in Mutoko and Mudzi rural districts of Zimbabwe have been established, these CDCs are doing targeted TB screening among key populations and make early referrals of presumed TB cases to Health Facilities. Moreover, our CDCs are facilitating community dialogues on TB, and community feedback to health centres to inform clinical decision making and improve the delivery of TB services. Thus far, our interventions have contributed towards increased TB notifications by communities, enhanced access to TB services for TB clients at grassroots level and meaningfully involved affected communities in the Zimbabwe National TB Program. |
