Stop TB Ambassador

On this World TB Day, I wish to draw the world's attention to the terrible toll of tuberculosis on women--an issue which is often ignored or forgotten.

Tuberculosis is the third leading cause of death worldwide among women aged 15-44, those in their prime working and child-rearing years. When a woman becomes ill with tuberculosis, those who depend on her suffer too. Her children are often forced out of school; and her family may be driven into, or deeper into, poverty.

In many countries around the world, women delay seeking care when they have symptoms of tuberculosis because of cultural and financial barriers. They may delay accessing care until the illness is severe and difficult -- or impossible -- to treat effectively.

World TB Day is the time to remind leaders around the world that all people, no matter who they are or where they live, must have access to prompt diagnosis and effective treatment of tuberculosis. But many women in particular are not being reached with this life-saving care. It is time we paid attention to their special needs.
