| National Advocacy (Patient led) |
Just a word about my own organization. FISS-MST/SIDA is a community based organization formed by people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in 1997 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. My organization provides support to patients infected with HIV and TB in 6 universities, both in urban and rural Cameroon. This year for the first time, as a result of our advocacy activities the Minister of Health will declare universal access to ARVs for the whole country.
I joined the Stop TB Partnership in 2005 as Vice Chair of the ACSM Working Group as I have had TB. Now I will dedicate myself, through the structure of the Partnership, within the Patient-Led Task Force to build capacity and empower patients and affected communities to raise their voice and concerns regarding universal access to TB treatment.
The key activities of the Task Force this year are:
- Translate and roll out existing information for patients including the Patient's Charter
- Develop new information materials for patients including the TB Survival Handbook and the TB Treatment Companion
- Build leadership in civil society including production of the Patient Advocacy Training Toolkit
- Provide forums for improved patient support in endemic countries including pilot TB clubs in 5 high burden and 2 low burden countries
The Task Force will hold regular conference calls to ensure that the products and activities outlined in the workplan are delivered on time.

TB still suffers from a lack of visibility in donor countries and a lack of mobilization in high burden countries. If asked to rank the global seriousness of diseases around the world, the average person in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo would rank HIV/AIDS, polio, malaria and perhaps cancer, diabetes and vaccine preventable diseases fi rst. TB is seldom mentioned. XDR-TB has changed that to a certain degree, but visibility of TB can still be improved.
In 2004 TBTV.ORG, the global TB-Patient NGO, created the "Run for Life" campaign and organized participation in the Paris Marathon in April 2005 while initiating simultaneous mini-marathons in two developing countries (involving a few hundred people in each). Twelve patients (TB, TB-HIV, and MDR-TB) and their supporters ran the Paris marathon in a relay while one ran the entire race, and two members of... Read more...

There are many great initiatives being led by current and former TB/MDR-TB patients. As our community grows and more activists and advocates are doing good works, it is difficult to keep up with what everyone is doing. The TB Survival Project (www.tbsurvivalproject.org) has created the Community Action Report (C.A.R) to aid a better understanding between activists and advocates. It's aim is to outline what indivduals and organisations are doing in respect of their HIV/TB and MDR-TB activities. The benefits of this are sharing our experience, preventing replication, and providing opportunities for capacity building and collaboration between each other.
You may want want to take a look at the attached diagram (PDF format) as an example. It shows the activites of the TB Survival Project. This is one way of getting across information in a simple and understandable manner. You may also want to write a few words (we suggest a maximum of 700) outlining your current activities, acheivements, and plans for the future. Log onto the TB Surival Project Website and send in your information. It can then be posted on the website, thereby centralizing data where people can view this information.
