Stop TB Private Sector Constituency (PSC) Meeting, 8-9 May 2008, Cairo

The meeting of the Private Sector Constituency of the Stop TB partnership, held in Cairo on 8-9 May 2008, brought together some 50 participants from international organizations, NGOs, government and companies. Discussions focused mainly on concrete actions and implementation of best practice. The meeting included presentations by a hospitality group describing how it is using its core competencies to increase its clients' awareness of TB; by large employers explaining why and how they manage comprehensive TB care and control programmes for their employees; by a major pharmaceutical company which has been using partnerships to greatly enhance both early drug discovery and equitable access to patients; and by a regional diagnostics manufacturer exploring the different requirements necessary to make new products accessible in remote areas. Discussions on the role of the private sector in advocacy, communication and social mobilization on TB care and control brought out interesting ideas from the participants. In addition, participants explored different ways for the private sector to become more involved in the Stop TB Partnership, and agreed on concrete next steps.
