Organization Description:
YOUTHS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (YUSUD) is a not-for-profit making, non-religious and non-political youth-led CBO working with the young people and the local communities through promoting the "Social Entrepreneurship Concept" by combining the passion of a social mission with business disciplines, innovation and determination and is therefore strategically using Business Model Approaches in responding to Social Problems such as HIV/AIDS pandemic, STIs, TB, Communicable diseases, Poverty, Unemployment, Under-Employment, Drugs and Substance Abuse, Teenage Pregnancy, Prostitution, Crime, Environmental Degradation etc which have hit hardest on the people at the Base of Pyramid (BOP)

We work with people at the BOP including rural communities, urban poor, PLWHA, the Young people, OVCs, Widows/Widowers, PWDs and the women to empower them on socio-economic and cultural issues.

Kisumu County in Nyanza Province has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Kenya. TB is the leading killer among the PLWHA in Nyanza region mostly due to lack of access to drugs, poor hygiene practices and lack of awareness.

YUSUD therefore has been involved in and intends to double its efforts in promoting community awareness on the preventive measures and general knowledge on TB, Mobilize resources towards management of TB at Community level, Assist those infected on the effective curative measures on TB.

Contribution

Please tell us how your organization will contribute to the Global Plan to Stop TB by briefly describing its involvement in any of the areas of work listed below:

TB Care Delivery:
YUSUD has been involved in promoting community awareness on the preventive measures and general knowledge on TB, Mobilize resources towards management of TB at Community level, Assist those infected on the effective curative measures on TB.

TB-HIV:
YUSUD is running a campaign called Going beyond ABC: Fighting HIV/AIDS thro Green Energy which is a program designed and developed to provide strategies that address preventive measures and Comprehensive Care through socio-economic empowerment of the Youth, PLWHA and the community at large.

For the Young people, this program provides creative approaches that ensure young people have the knowledge and skills in managing and exploiting locally available resources to improve their livelihoods. As a Preventative approach to behavioral management, the program focuses on what environmental friendly activities the youth can engage in to be successful now and in the future.

For PLWHA, This program attempts to provide practical solutions in ensuring that the environments where they thrive is free of pollution by adopting the use of green energy for their basic energy needs in cooking, lighting, phone charging, food preservation and water treatment. Furthermore, Green energies are available free of charge and therefore will assist PLWHA in saving money which can therefore be diverted towards achieving other personal developments and/or providing further comprehensive care.

Research:
YUSUD has been conducting research on the various factors affecting the management of HIV/AIDS and TB at community levels by focusing a lot on the socio-economic contexts. The study aimed to interrogate the role of financial independence of the the young people and the women negotiating for safer sexual practices and in making decisions on the management of the environments where they thrive.
