On-line campaign on drug resistant TB
Health & Development Networks
2 March 2007
According to latest estimates, 10% of all new TB infections are resistant to at least one anti-TB drug. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) are currently in the news following recent reports indicating rates of drug resistance may be far higher than previously thought.
Drug-resistant TB poses a grave global public health threat, especially in populations with high rates of HIV, and requires an immediate and urgent global response.
In the 50 days leading up to World TB Day (Saturday 24th March, 2007), Health and Development Networks and the AIDSCareWatch Campaign are organizing the One-in-Ten Campaign focusing on drug resistant TB. The campaign aims to increase awareness, bring front-line perspectives to current MDR- and XDR-TB discussions, and advocate for TB patients to receive the best possible care.

Launch of Health Systems Action Network
USAID is a sponsor of the Health Systems Action Network consultation process
8 November 2005
What must be done to strengthen health systems in order to improve health outcomes? There is currently discussion about developing a Health Systems Action Network (HSAN) as a means to: i) Create momentum to enhance the global focus on the importance of health systems to achieve health outcomes ii) Improve communication and the flow of credible information about health systems strengthening interventions that work and iii) Promote greater coordination and collaboration.
We are now seeking input about what the most pressing health system challenges are, and how we can be better organized to address them.
Please visit the HSAN website www.hsanet.org/speakout.html to read the views of prominent thinkers on this topic, and to contribute your opinions via a web-based survey. Please note that the survey is also available on the website in Spanish and French. The links to the surveys are below.

Asthma Drug Facility Launched
International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union)
1 September 2005
The Union is working with WHO and other partners to create a new drug supply mechanism – the Asthma Drug Facility (ADF) – that will allow clients to buy affordable good quality essential asthma drugs. The ADF is following the same basic principles that guided the establishment of the Stop TB Partnership’s successful Global TB Drug Facility (GDF).
The ADF will supply asthma drugs crucial for implementation of the Practical Approach to Lung health (PAL). Improving the health services response to respiratory illness and the affordability of drugs will mean better care for patients. With improved credibility of health services, more patients will consult, and detection rates should rise for diseases such as TB, other lung diseases, and HIV.
For the latest information about the ADF launch, please visit www.GlobalADF.org or email ADF@iuatld.org.
