Rio de Janeiro, 24 March 2009-Hearts and minds will be touched by IMAGES TO STOP TUBERCULOSIS, a powerful and innovative new photo exhibition opening this week in Rio at the Centro de Convenções SulAmérica, the Favela Rocinha, and the Centro Cultural Justiçia Federal before moving on to tour museums and public spaces in other major world cities. The exhibition aims to raise worldwide awareness of the disease, which kills nearly 5 000 people every day.
An exciting line-up of international photographers has captured both suffering and hope among those affected by tuberculosis, in locales as diverse as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Russia and the US. The images, both colour and black-and-white, will be exhibited through a mix of styles and formats-including projections and digital displays-and complemented by valuable information about the disease.
The Rio exhibition will also feature a photo reportage by Korean photojournalist Jean Chung, winner of the 2008.
