In sub-saharan Africa and Arab Middle-Eastern countries: A similar 12-15 minutes programme will be produced dealing with a general overview of the situation in the sub-region, with interviews on current TB status in the region, how to better implement prevention, diagnostic and treatment.

Stop TB Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, conducted a close agenda between civil society and the TB program addressing such issues as prevention, information sharing and education. These actions are a call to authorities and the media to acknowledge the gravity of the disease among the TB/HIV population in the "favelas", hostels, and homeless people. Stop TB Brazil also collaborated closely with ALERJ, the legislative assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro around the WTBD events.

Special appreciation is given to the TV actors Toni Amos and Marieta Severo for their great voluntary participation in the PSA produced for this TB Campaign. The PSA, which features the two actors previously mentioned, and a TB patient, explains the disease. It will be shown at the "rede globo" during the month of March, and will be widely distributed.

175 TB controllers at the Spring tuberculosis conference will gather early to link with WHO Geneva to discuss the global challenge of TB and the "Call to Action". They will hear from Mario Raviglione, the achievements of 2005, and from Sarah England, the enormous challenges addressed in the second Global Plan 2006- 2015. Finally they will discuss the role for Canada in the Global Plan. To reach the targets of 2015, all members of civil society must, like Stephen Lewis, become Ambassadors in the commitment to render the public health problem of TB to the past.

In recognizing that visual representations have a unique impact in reaching out to people and communicating ideas MGAC will be creating a "visual petition" to send to the Canadian government for World TB Day.On WTBD we will be "tabling" at McGill University, asking students who support the Global Fund to lend their name and face to our project. Digital photos will be taken of all participants holding a whiteboard with our message (something like "Stop TB: Fund the Global Fund) and their name written below. We will also be taking photos at the MIHI (McGill International Health Initiative) Neglected Diseases conference, which will take place the weekend after World TB Day.

The photos of students, researchers and other interested people will be sent to the Canadian government as a "visual petition." The photos will also likely be used in some form of photo exhibit and public-awareness activity in the future.

The walk will be from Chest Clinic Korle bu Teaching Hospital to Texaco to meet with the group from Mamprobi Polyclinic and Dansoman Polyclinic then through Tuesday Market Rd., through Beach road to Korle Gonno Township Community (visit on-going support program units) and finally end at the St Michael and all Angels Anglican Church Korle Gonno for refreshments.

This medium will be used to advocate for the Community Support Program and for community education on TB control through sharing of pamphlets and brochure. WTBD celebrations will focus on the launch of the Global Plan to Stop TB (2006-2015) in the Philippines at the Philippine International Convention Center to be officiated by the STOP TB Partnership executive committee represented by Dr. Giorgio Roscigno, assisted by the chairs of the Working Groups on MDR-TB, TB/HIV, and New Drugs. Press coverage of the panel discussion addressing regional and national plans to support the Global Plan, including the engagement of the international community, the private sector, and the public sector is planned. Additionally, the International Standards of TB care and the Patients' Charter will be presented. Ending the event will be the signing of The Call to Stop TB by all stakeholders in the public and private sector.

The WTBD theme "Sama, sama, sugpuin ang TB" is a call for everyone to band together to conquer TB with celebrations ushered in by a fun run in Quezon City to launch the city government TB control program "Sagip Baga" and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Philippine Coalition against Tuberculosis, the Department of Health, the Department of Science, and the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development.

Lilly Partnership: Initiatives launched to address training and education needs in TB burdened countries.

Nobel Peace Laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Betty Williams join forces on the 21st of March in Geneva, with global healthcare organizations representing more than 20 million health care providers in highlighting the need to provide the necessary human resources to fight the growing TB threat in high burden countries. They called on governments to immediately commit to fund, train and scale-up the health care workforce to combat TB and help prevent 5 000 daily deaths from this curable disease. At this special event, Eli Lilly & Company together with the Stop TB Partnership, Marcos Espinal, and leading global health and relief organizations launched a number of initiatives to tackle the human resources crisis in TB treatment. the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the International Hospital Federation (IHF), and the World Medical Association (WMA) presented their TB training programs for nurses, hospital managers and doctors. The World Economic Forum and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies outlined their new programs to introduce TB prevention and treatment into the workplace and communities, so that workers and families can be diagnosed correctly and the social stigma of the disease reduced.

The Second Annual New Mexico Tuberculosis Summit

The purpose of the event is to engage members of Congress, the media, health professionals, and the public in a discussion of the most important current issues pertaining to tuberculosis in the world, in our nation, and in our state. Of primary interest will be a new study showing that it is more cost-effective to tackle TB in its countries of origin than to try to deal with it once it makes its way into our country. Special emphasis will also be placed on the recently released Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015, the funding needs for that plan, and the emerging issues around TB and multi-drug-resistant TB along our border with Mexico.

Featured speakers include Dr Marcos Espinal, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership, based in Geneva; Licenciado Hector Xavier Martinez, Executive Secretary of the US-Mexico Border Health C ommission; Dr Gary Simpson, Infectious Disease Specialist with the State of New Mexico Public Health Division; and Congresswoman Heather Wilson, who will once again co-sponsor the foreign aid TB funding bill, the Stop TB Now Act of 2006. The Summit will take place at 2:00 PM on 24 March 2006 at the University of New Mexico with a video-link to New Mexico State University.

A pesar de que la tuberculosis es una enfermedad prevenible y curable, continúa siendo un importante problema de salud pública en todo el mundo. En la Región de las Américas cada año se diagnostican 230.000 casos nuevos de tuberculosis y más de 53.000 mueren a causa de esta enfermedad. Además, el control de la tuberculosis enfrenta retos tales como la coinfección tuberculosis/VIH y la creciente polifarmacorresistencia, en un contexto caracterizado por la diversidad de la situación epidemiológica, la heterogeneidad de los sistemas nacionales de salud y el diferente grado de desarrollo de los programas nacionales de tuberculosis.
