World TB Day Briefing Notes

Dear Stop TB Partners,

World TB Day 2005 is a major opportunity to focus attention on the massive challenge of defeating the TB epidemic at the global, regional, national and community level. It will also be an important milestone for our collective efforts, asgovernments have pledged to detect 70% of all infectious TB cases and cure 85% of those cases by the end of 2005. Meeting these "process" targets is essential to achieve the 2015 Millennium Development Goals of reducing TB prevalence and deaths by half relative to the year 1990.

In this special year, the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat proposes to focus World TB Day on the central role of frontline TB care providers in the fight against TB.
Here you will find the first of three Briefing Notes that the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat will distribute for planning and implementing advocacy and social mobilisation activities for World TB Day 2005.

  1. Briefing Note - 1 This document provides background and context for the frontline TB care providers theme. Due to strong recommendations by a large number of partners, no global slogan is being proposed for WTBD 2005, as explained in the note. We will however invite regional offices, national TB programs and other partners to share the slogans they create on the theme, which will be posted on the WTBD05 web page. Two informational annexes are also attached:
    • Annexe-1: A note on how to access global TB data and country profiles from the newly re-designed WHO TB website. More on using country data in subsequent Briefing Notes.
    • Annexe-2: A contact list of Regional and National coordinating partners of the Millennium Campaign.

  2. Briefing Note - 2 This document outlines a strategic advocacy plan, and provides:
    • A listing of key global and regional advocacy events.
    • A short list of suggested activities to implement at national and sub-national levels.
    • A list of information products that the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat will produce for global distribution.

  3. Briefing Note - 3 This document will provide:
    • A more detailed description of planned advocacy events.
    • A more detailed description and distribution schedule for advocacy products and materials, including web-based resources and web alerts.
    • A template for feedback from partners on planned activities at global, regional, national and sub-national levels, which will be posted on our web-site.
    Briefing note 3

We trust that you will find this first Briefing Note useful, and the schedule of the other Briefing Notes acceptable.

With best wishes,

Advocacy and Communication Team
