15TH STOP TB PARTNERSHIP COORDINATING BOARD MEETING

The Government of Tanzania has arranged for the 15th Stop TB Partnership Coordinating Board meeting to be held on Tuesday 28 October and Wednesday 29 October 2008 in Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

REGISTRATION

Please register your participation at the 15th Stop TB Partnership Coordinating Board meeting by completing the attached registration form and returning it to Winnie de Guzman (deguzmanw@who.int), fax no. + 41 22 791 4886 by 26 September 2008.

BAGAMOYO

Bagamoyo lies 75km north of Dar es Salaam on the coast of the Indian Ocean.

Bagamoyo was recently designated as Tanzania's seventh world heritage site and is the oldest town in Tanzania. A visit to Bagamoyo offers a glimpse into Tanzania's past. Its history has been influenced by Arab and Indian traders, the German colonial government and Christian missionaries. Although Bagamoyo is no longer the busy port city that it once was, Tanzania's Department of Antiquities is working to revitalize the town and maintain the dozens of ruins in and around it. Bagamoyo, which means "lay down your heart" in Swahili, was the major slave trading post in East Africa.

The current President of Tanzania, H.E. President Kikwete, was born and lives in the town.

Bagamoyo

The Paradise Holiday Resort in Bagamoyo is approximately a one hour drive from the international airport in Dar es Salaam. An airport pick up can be arranged at a cost of US$ 100.

Preferential rates have been negotiated at the Paradise Holiday Resort of $75.00 net of taxes and inclusive of breakfast (taken in the Bahari Restaurant). This is for a standard/deluxe room. Tip: Board members are advised to ask for a room with a renovated bathroom during check in. A limited number of Executive Suites are also available. These rooms are available at approximately US$200 but feature a living room and guest bathroom. Please indicate if you wish to reserve an Executive Suite. If you receive UN per diem it will not cover Executive Suite accommodation.

Participants are expected to settle their own bills upon check out. Bills can be settled in USD, travelers cheques, local currency (Tanzanian Shilling) or visa/mastercard credit card. If paying in USD you will get higher exchange rate if you use large denomination notes (i.e. USD 50 or 100). Only notes issued after 2003 will be accepted. Credit card payments will attract a 6% charge. Please ensure that you have your PIN number.

Dar es Salaam

For those Board members arriving late or wishing to stay over night in Dar Es Salaam, airport pick for the Kempinski Hotel Kilimanjaro costs USD 30.

A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Hotel Kempinski Kilimanjaro at the reduced rate of US$170 (net of tax and inclusive of breakfast). Board members should complete the attached booking confirmation form, citing as reference STOP TB and fax (+255 22 2120777) this to the Hotel Kempinski to guarantee their reservation with a credit card.

The Secretariat has arranged a complimentary shuttle bus from the hotel Kempinski to the Paradise Holiday Resort on the morning of 28 October. The bus will depart promptly at 7AM to allow participants to arrive at the Paradise Holiday Resort in good time for the start of the meeting. Participants who miss the 7AM bus will need to make their own way to Bagamoyo. A taxi can be booked from the Kempinski. This will cost approximately USD 120.

We will arrange additional buses if required.

Please clearly indicate your room choice on the registration form. The Secretariat will book your accommodation at the Bagamoyo Holiday Resort but Board members are requested to finalize their booking with the Hotel Kempinski Kilimanjaro.

TRAVEL TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT

The Paradise Holiday Resort in Bagamoyo is approximately a one hour drive from the international airport in Dar es Salaam. An airport pick up can be arranged at a cost of US$ 100.

The Hotel Kempinski Kilimanjaro is approximately 20 minutes from the international airport in Dar es Salaam. An airport pick up can be arranged at the cost of USD 30. Please book directly - see attached form.

A complementary shuttle bus will run between the Hotel Kempinski to the Paradise Holiday Resort in the morning of Tuesday 28th of October and return on the evening of Wednesday 29th of October (following the completion of the meeting).

VISA

All foreign visitors should be in possession of a passport that is valid for at least 6 months past the date of entry into the country. Most passport holders require a visa to travel to Tanzania and you should obtain one prior to travelling from your nearest Tanzanian diplomatic mission.

It is possible to obtain a tourist visa for a single entry at the main ports of entry to Tanzania but this is subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. If you will require a multiple entry visa you will need to arrange this through a Tanzanian diplomatic mission before your arrival in Tanzania. Otherwise you will have to buy a single entry visa each time you enter the country.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from areas with risk of yellow fever transmission. This is particularly relevant for those travelling to Tanzania from neighbouring African countries. See the Tanzanian Government website for more details:

If there is no Tanzanian Embassy in your country, do let the Secretariat. We will attempt to facilitate with the Tanzanian authorities on Board members behalf.

FLIGHT CONFIRMATION

Please ensure that the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat is aware of your arrival and departure details. Please insert flight date and time on your registration form. Also notify any changes to Winnie de Guzman (deguzmanw@who.int) as soon as they are known. Upon arrival in Bagamoyo, please hand over your airline ticket to the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat for re-confirmation of your return flight.

SAFETY

Most visits to Tanzania are trouble-free. The country is generally peaceful and Tanzanians are open and friendly with foreigners.

However Board members are advised to take sensible and common sense precautions, particularly against petty crime. You should avoid walking alone, especially in isolated areas and on beaches, particularly after dark. Do not make yourself an obvious target for muggers and pickpockets - do not carry cameras or large sums of cash in the streets or wear expensive-looking jewellery or watches.

There is an underlying threat from terrorism in Tanzania. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. In August 2008, Tanazania marked the tenth anniversary of the simultaneous terrorist attacks on the US Embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi (Kenya). These killed 12 people in Dar es Salaam and 232 in Nairobi.

HEALTH

Malaria is common in Tanzania. Board members may wish to take prophylaxis. Other diseases, such as cholera and rift valley fever, occur periodically, largely in rural areas where access to sanitation is limited. This should pose no difficulty at either hotel being used by the Board. You should try to drink bottled water and avoid ice in drinks.

In case of medical emergency, please contact the Secretariat desk.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

The monetary unit in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) subdivided into 100 Cents. Notes are available in TZS: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 1000, 5000 and 10000. The rate of exchange is US$1=1150 TZS (as of 20 August 2008).

USD are widely used in Tanzania. USD can be changed at the Bureau de Change at the lobby level of the Hotel Kempinski where there is also an ATM (mastercard/maestro).

Money can also be changed with the cashier at the Bagamoyo Holiday Resort.

COMMUNICATION/POWER

The telephone country code for Tanzania is +255. Local mobile phone operators have roaming agreements with major operators and Blackberry type devices work.

Free wireless internet access is available at the Hotel Kempinski Kilimanjaro. At the Bagamoyo Paradise Holiday Resort, Board member should purchase access codes from the reception - approximately USD $2 per hour.

Tanzania uses 240 volt 3 pin plugs. Board members are encouraged to bring a suitable adaptor for personal use. For ease of reference, the plugs/sockets used are the same as in the UK.

CLIMATE/ATTIRE

In October, the temperature is expected to range between a high of 31oC and a low of 20oC.

It is recommended that you wear business attire inside the hotel and during meetings. Cultural dress is welcome.

Board members may wish to bring lighter clothes for the evening/cultural event and to take advantage of Bagamoyo's tennis courts and beach.

MEETING ORGANIZATION

To assist you during your stay in Bagamoyo, a secretariat will be established in the Paradise Hotel Resort.

You will receive a background dossier upon arrival. Documents will be posted on the Stop TB Partnership web site approximately 10 to 14 days before the Coordinating Board Meeting (http://www.stoptb.org/cb/meetings/).

For further information, please feel free to get in touch with the organizers. The team will happily assist you with your requests, wishes and needs.
